Our Big Science Week!!

'Science Alive - Fairy Tale Forensics'
'Science Alive' came to school. We had so much fun experiment, making hypothesis, observations and conclusions. We had to find out who was going into 'The Three Bears House.' The evidence came to Lucy. Have a look at some of the experiments we got up too!

Science and Writing
Our writing this week has been on the science experiments we have been completing in class. Have a look at the steps we took for each experiment. In the other slideshow below, are a few examples of their writing.

We made
  • Porridge
  • Ooobleck Glue
  • Butter

Room 10 is a 'SMART CLASS'

We have been learning about what our personal strengths are, by using the 'Smarts.' This enables us to know what each of our classmates are good at. It also helps Miss Campbell plan programmes that meet the individual needs. Some of us are 'Smart' in two areas. Have a look at the pictures below.
  • Body Smart
  • Nature Smart
  • Logic Smart
  • Word Smart
  • Sound Smart
  • People Smart

Morphing Ourselves

We had lots of fun with 'Photobooth' and changing (morphing) our photo. We all had turns at being the helper and experimenting with 'Photobooth.' These pictures will be apart of our 'Smart Display.' Who can you recognise?

KABOOM

This term our inquiry unit is on " Fairy Tale Forensics." We are very excited because we will be doing lots of science experiments this term. This week we experimented with "Fizzy Sherbet" and Archie brought an experiment in for us to try. It was called "Blow Your Top." Some of us were also selected to work with Mrs Howison to complete a milk experiment too. Lauren wrote a great explanation the following day and was sent to Mrs Warren for her brilliant piece of writing about the milk experiment.

We made...
Predictions (hypothesis) - What we think will happen in the experiment.
Observations and drawings - Watch and draw what is happening at each step.
Explanation - What happened in the experiment?
Conclusion - Was my hypothesis right or wrong?

Have a look at some of our explanations of what happened in each experiment.

The Big Milk Experiment

By Lauren

You will need...

  • 3 teaspoons of food colouring
  • 1 dish of milk
  • 1 cotton bud with 1 drop of dishwashing powder on it.

Prediction

I think the milk will turn all different colours like pink, purple and orange.

Explanation

When we put the food colouring into the dish of milk there were three colours in the milk. Then we put a cotton bud with dishwashing powder on it and the colours were swaying and twirling. Our one turned pink.

Fizzy Sherbet

You will need...

  • 2 tablespoons of citrus acid
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 8 tablespoons of icing sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of raro crystals

Mix all the ingredients in

Explanation

When we did it we all had to stand back and then it exploded. It was fun. We got to taste it. It tasted sour and it was bubbly. Samantha

The fizzy sherbet was yucky and I was sick. Steffen

It fizzed in my mouth. By Sophia

It felt like my tongue was exploding. By Isaac

Blow your Top

You will need...

Salt Dough

  • 6 cups of flour
  • 2 cups of salt
  • 4 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • 2 cups of water

Mix all ingredients in

  • Put bottle into a saucepan
  • Mould the salt dough around the bottle.
  • Fill thr bottle with warm water
  • Add drops of food colouring into the bottle
  • 6 drops of detergent
  • 2 tablespooms of baking soda
  • Slowly add vinegar into the bottle

Explanation

When we poured the vinegar into the bottle it reacted to the baking soda and it came out of the bottle. By Quillan

When we put the baking soda into the bottle it fizzled. Then when we poured vinegar into the bottle it came out of the top like lava from a volcano. By Cole

Blow Your Top - Whole Class Prediction and Explanation

Prediction

It will turn into a rainbow - Krystal

The volcano will explode - Samantha

The red stuff inside will explode - Thomas

Explanation

We had to make the salt dough for the volcano first and then we put the dough around the bottle in the middle of the saucepan. In the bottle we put all the ingredients in but when we put the baking soda in it started to fizz. Next we poured in some vinegar slowly and the vinegar reacted with the baking soda. It exploded like a volcano with lava running down the side.

Conclusion

Samanta's and Thomas' hypothesis were right but Krystal's was wrong.

Have a look at the steps we took to complete the

"Blow Your Top" experiment.
